Tasmania Tourer: Sarah's 2025 Troopy Built for the Long Haul

Working in remote Tasmania means Sarah spends plenty of time behind the wheel, travelling some of the state's most challenging roads, from winding mountain passes and rain-soaked highways to isolated gravel tracks.

That's exactly why she spent so much time creating what she describes as her perfect touring vehicle – a meticulously built 2025 Toyota LandCruiser Troop Carrier designed to handle everything Tasmania can throw at it.

One of the final pieces of the puzzle was the tyre and wheel package. The Troopy now rides on 285/70R17 Toyo Open Country AT3 tyres fitted to 17x9 Method Race Wheels 312-HD rims, a combination Sarah says completely transformed the vehicle.

"Taking off the factory 'cheese cutter' 750R16s and fitting the new wheels and tyres really finished off the build," Sarah said.

Moving from the narrow factory 750R16 tyres to the wider 285/70R17 Toyo Open Country AT3s has not only changed the vehicle's appearance but also improved its road manners and stability.

"They changed the whole look of the Troopy, but more importantly they've made a huge difference to how it drives."

Given the conditions she regularly encounters, tyre performance was a major consideration.

"I'm often driving through remote parts of Tasmania on wet and windy roads, and changing the wheel and tyre combination has been a massive improvement. The Toyo tyres have been fantastic so far and have given me a lot more confidence behind the wheel," she said.

Known for their balance of on-road comfort and off-road capability, the Toyo Open Country AT3s have become a popular choice among touring enthusiasts, delivering dependable performance across a wide range of conditions. For Sarah, they've proven particularly well suited to Tasmania's unpredictable weather and winding backroads, while the Method Race Wheels 312-HD rims complete the Troopy's tough, purposeful stance.

The rest of the build is equally impressive. Completed with the help of Project Overlander, the Troopy features a Headspace Campers roof conversion, Redarc electrical system, Dobinsons GVM upgrade, JMACX diff correction, ARB Safari snorkel, Boss Aluminium awning, Long Range Automotive water tank, Car Builders sound deadening, Thorburns gull wings and rear bar, plus a custom Bushwrapz finish by Tutela Detailing.

The result is a LandCruiser built with purpose. Every modification has been selected to improve comfort, capability and self-sufficiency for extended travel in remote areas.

For Sarah, it's more than just a vehicle build.

It's a touring platform specifically designed for the realities of life and work in Tasmania's wilderness—and with the Toyo Open Country AT3s helping keep her connected to the road in all conditions, it's ready for wherever the next adventure lead
